Choose a tracking source

Match each tracking source to where customers find and contact your business.

Open a business’s Tracking page to set up tracking. Only users with account access can add or edit tracking sources; invited clients can view the leads that arrive through them.

Where the customer starts Tracking source to add
A phone link or number on your website Website calls
A contact or quote form on your site Website forms
A call button inside a Google Search ad Google Ads calls
Your business on Google Search or Maps Google Business Profile
Your Local Services Ads account Local Services Ads
A print flyer, directory, or social page Other sources

Website calls and direct calls from Google Search ads are tracked separately, so set up both if you want to measure both. Connecting your Google Ads account alone doesn’t install NMC’s website script or attach phone numbers to your other channels. See Where a lead came from for how NMC assigns each lead’s channel and source.

For any phone-based source, you’ll choose a verified forwarding number, review the price quote, and place the tracking number where instructed. If you leave mid-setup, NMC saves a draft without buying any numbers until you choose Start tracking. You can pick up any unfinished draft on Tracking by choosing Finish next to its name.

Keep each tracking number strictly in the place you created it for:

  • Sharing a single number across both a postcard and an online directory prevents NMC from telling which one brought the call.
  • Never copy a website pool number onto print materials or directories, because calls to a pool number are matched to whichever website visitor saw it most recently.
Setting Details and defaults
Name Required (1 to 120 characters). Pick a clear name you’ll recognize in reports and the inbox.
Calls forward to The verified forwarding number that rings when customers dial this source’s tracking number.
Record calls Enabled by default for new sources. Controls whether call audio and transcripts are recorded.
Phone number shown on your website Required for website call tracking; the existing phone number on your site for NMC to swap.
How many numbers? 4 to 30 numbers when starting website call tracking; you can add more later up to 30 total.

Review Record calls before choosing Start tracking and see Activities for how recordings and transcripts work. Some states and provinces require notifying callers when calls are recorded, so check the rules where your business and callers are located. (When adding a forwarding number, its optional label can also be up to 120 characters.)

To update settings later, open Business → Tracking, select the tracking source, edit its Settings card (Calls holds the forwarding number, per-minute call rate, and recording switch), and choose Save. Text alerts are configured per forwarding number; see Text alerts.

Place a test call from a separate phone, confirm your business line answers, and check that the call appears in NMC. Test each website form separately when enabling it, and check the status on Tracking for any follow-up steps.
